The Glass Art Studio is situated on an Arab horse farm of the Waltstroom Stud, that have produced two world champions in endurance riding, four kilometers outside Wakkerstroom on the foothills of the Drakensberg Mountains in Mpumalanga, South Africa.

Susanne van der Walt, a former art lecturer and porcelain painter, started her studio nine years ago and is working full time doing warm glass bowls, panels, lamp shades, pendants, etc.

The process involves taking sheet glass (also called float glass), cutting it according to the desired size, decorating it and firing it in a special kiln to about 800°C. The paint used is permanent after firing and all additions such as glass beads, copper wire etc., are fused in permanently.

"Susanne in her glass teaching studio" Moonscape: Float glass bowl with holes. 40 cms diameter.
Gold drape: 40 x 18cms. Draped floatglass, airbrushed, with a touch of frit.

Flowers: Float glass, 33cms diameter. Lace effect airbrushed and flowers hand painted. Gold outlines.

Susanne's passion is teaching. She loves having students - adults as well as children - who are interested in making their own glass creations. She has a self catering guest house on the farm to accommodate her students and then teaches them in her studio. Some students are interested in having a creative experience and others want to start their own businesses.
